3 Days in Budva, A First-Timer's Itinerary

A practical three-day framework for first-time visitors: base yourself in Budva, cover the main beaches and Old Town on Day 1, take a day trip to Kotor on Day 2, and explore the coast south toward Sveti Stefan on Day 3.

This itinerary is a framework, not a schedule, Budva rewards slowness. Adjust for your travel style and what the weather does.

Day 1, Old Town, Mogren Beach, and Budva Evenings

Start at Budva Old Town (Stari Grad) when it is still cool in the morning. The walled city is compact and walkable, allow an hour to wander the lanes, look into the Holy Trinity Church, and climb up to the Citadel for a view over the bay. The Citadel interior has a small museum; whether you go in depends on your interest.

Mid-morning, follow the coastal path southwest from the Old Town walls to Mogren Beach, about a five-minute walk. The path can be slippery after rain. Mogren is one of Budva’s most scenic beaches; sunbeds are available to hire. Swim, settle in.

For lunch, the cluster of restaurants near the Old Town walls has plenty of choice. The evening is Budva’s strong suit: the Old Town fills with people after dark in summer. If you are curious about nightlife, Top Hill is the area’s signature open-air club, on event nights, shuttle buses run from central Budva. Check their website for the current programme.

Day 2, Day Trip to Kotor

Kotor is roughly 28 km from Budva and the most popular day trip for good reason. The walled Old Town (UNESCO World Heritage Site) sits inside a fortified harbour; the Venetian walls climb steeply above to San Giovanni Fortress at 260 m. Allow half a day minimum.

Get there early, buses depart Budva bus station for Kotor throughout the morning (check current timetables locally). Alternatively, a taxi or pre-booked transfer is faster and more flexible.

In Kotor, walk the walls (the hike to the fortress and back typically takes 1–2 hours depending on fitness), explore the medieval lanes, and find lunch at one of the harbour-facing restaurants. Return to Budva in the late afternoon.

In the evening, explore Budva’s restaurant scene. Vista Vidikovac on the coastal path has sea views and serves Montenegrin cuisine.

Day 3, South Along the Coast: Sveti Stefan and Bečići

Head south along the coast. Sveti Stefan is approximately 7 km from Budva, the island village is the most photographed scene on the Montenegrin coast. The pink-sand beach adjacent to the causeway is publicly accessible (the island itself is a private resort); verify access conditions locally before the trip.

Bečići beach is around 3 km southeast of Budva, one of the longest sandy beaches on the coast. The promenade restaurants make it an easy place to spend a long afternoon.

In the evening, consider a boat tour departing from Budva harbour, these run until early evening in peak season and give a different perspective on the coastline you’ve been walking all week.
