Ričardova Glava, Richard’s Head in English, is the little beach pressed right up against the seaward walls of Budva’s Old Town. The name is not ancient history: it honours the Hollywood actor Richard Widmark, who filmed the 1963 Viking adventure The Long Ships here, and it stuck.
The beach itself is small, around 100 metres of mostly fine pebble, framed by the town walls on one side and a wooded headland on the other, with Sveti Nikola island filling the view out to sea. The water is clear, the entry is easy, and there is a children’s playground beside the sand, which together with the location makes it a natural first-morning beach for families staying in or near the Old Town. It isn’t part of Montenegro’s official bathing-water monitoring programme, unlike Mogren and the other beaches nearby, so there is no published water-quality grade for it specifically.
Convenience is the whole point here, and also the catch. You step off the beach and you are two minutes from the Old Town gates, with sunbeds, beach bars and restaurants immediately at hand. But everyone else has the same idea, so in high season it is one of the busiest patches of coast in Budva. There is no parking at the beach itself; come on foot.
If it is full, the coastal path toward Mogren starts nearby, and the two coves there absorb the overflow.
